I was barely using them anyway, but now the login recovery isn’t sending the confirmation code I need to log in. Turns out they don’t like you deleting the apps, using a VPN, clearing all cookies / browsing data, and using a browser with a fingerprint randomizer.

I’m somewhat of a regular at The Moth, and I really enjoy them. You can’t take the judging too seriously (e.g. whoever goes first is generally the warmup act and is very unlikely to “win”, and whoever goes last has the massive benefit of a warmed up audience). But that said, I’ve won three, and been runner-up three times.

Infinity Mirrors

I made a pair of infinity mirrors for a friend’s wedding. I laser cut the one-way mirror, the frame, and soldered the LED strip. They’re mesmerizing to see IRL, and I’m happy with how they came out.

Backpacking Rocket Stove

I made a cat can backpacking stove, and after eating lukewarm stew, welded up a rocket stove in a small 32 ounce (909 ml) coffee can to replace it (where wood fires are allowed). There are commercially available flat-pack rocket-like stoves, but I don’t like the lack of insulation generally making a dirtier burn. When my stove is going, the flame is barely visible, and it makes very little smoke.

I’ve been working late into the night and weekends on Crash Space and Insignal PPE endeavors, in addition to regular work. After my sourdough literally fell flat, I reverted to my favorite diversion: making things.

When COVID cases in the U.S. were counted in four digits but rising fast, we at Crash Space looked for ways we could help. Already by that point, there were shortages of everything: Personal protective equipment (PPE), groceries, information. We found designs online for emergency ventilators, face masks, face shields, etc. that could be made with 3D printers, laser cutters and other prosumer tools we use. In the flurry for ideas and testing, I may have built a cardboard-iron lung.

SPRK: First Pitch

I got to pitch Insignal at an event put on by a Band of Angels investor alongside other investors. It was a whirlwind evening to handle solo, talking about the business/product while also making sure people didn’t blind or hurt themselves, but it was also a great evening. I got a lot interest, and a lot of great feedback on our pre-production samples.

Nerf Challenge

I was asked if I could “help fix some systems in an LA Live event.” It had opened to the public, so I’d be going in at 10PM and be out at 8AM the next morning. It was multiple interactive and mechatronic exhibits, which sounded interesting, so I agreed. It turned out to be massive both size-wise (it took the entire parking structure’s top floor) and in undertaking. It pushed the limits of my analytic and system engineering skills, and I loved it.

LA Maker Faire

I’m a regular at LA Maker Faire at this point, and I look forward to it every year. Seeing young people (and some adults) wide-eyed and fascinated with STEAM projects brings me joy, and my hope is that some of them are inspired to follow these disciplines and build their own creations.

Grey water Evapotron

Dual power wind/electric greywater evaporator. I built it for my Burning Man camp, and experimented with it as a tool for algaculture. The jamming resistance would be good for a small raceway pond, and for the carbon capture aspect of algaculture, wind power is a plus.

I’ve ran up to 50 miles, but due to some hip problems and finding that I enjoyed the challenge more than the extreme distance running, I decided that I did my last one (picture shows relevant medal, and the medal for the half-marathon I did the next day).
