Backpacking Rocket Stove

I made a cat can backpacking stove, and after eating lukewarm stew, welded up a rocket stove in a small 32 ounce (909 ml) coffee can to replace it (where wood fires are allowed). There are commercially available flat-pack rocket-like stoves, but I don’t like the lack of insulation generally making a dirtier burn. When my stove is going, the flame is barely visible, and it makes very little smoke.

Nerf Challenge

I was asked if I could “help fix some systems in an LA Live event.” It had opened to the public, so I’d be going in at 10PM and be out at 8AM the next morning. It was multiple interactive and mechatronic exhibits, which sounded interesting, so I agreed. It turned out to be massive both size-wise (it took the entire parking structure’s top floor) and in undertaking. It pushed the limits of my analytic and system engineering skills, and I loved it.

SPRK: Flares without fire

Flares are extreme temperature fires that happen to produce some light for signaling. Great as an infrared countermeasure, awful during fire season. I led product management / development of a clean-tech electronic replacement.

I developed a $6 electronics tinker kit for nonprofit, L.A. Makerspace, to help their work teaching kids STEAM skills. They work with LA City and County public libraries and had been using expensive electronics kits that needed to stay at the libraries, but at $6, the kits can be given away.

Grey water Evapotron

Dual power wind/electric greywater evaporator. I built it for my Burning Man camp, and experimented with it as a tool for algaculture. The jamming resistance would be good for a small raceway pond, and for the carbon capture aspect of algaculture, wind power is a plus.

Learnings:

I agree with Google’s SEO mantra: Content is king, but priming the pump doesn’t hurt either.
Luxury brand management is a tricky balance between offering a product and restricting access to it.
